  15. Well, after posting my fears regarding Viewpoint taking over the Avalon 3D
  16. model repository, I got two pieces of E-Mail form Viewpoint
  17. representatives. One from, Eliot Jacobsen, was merely a rehash of the FAQ
  18. he posted in various newsgroups. The other one from Jarrod Phillips
  19. (jphillips@viewpoint.com) was a bit on the nasty side.
  20. When I suggested that we might come up with an alternative site (or sites)
  21. as a repository, Mr. Phillips commented "By jumping on the bandwagon of
  22. negativity without a clue about Viewpoint's intentions, you advertise your
  23. ignorance."
  24. I didn't jump on any bandwagon, I posted my comments before most of the
  25. many other negative posts started hitting the NewsGroups. And I DID have
  26. some idea of Viewpoint's intentions...it was already announced by
  27. Viewpoint that they would not allow any more mirroring of Avalon by FTP
  28. sites., and that they were going to drop FTP support altogether, in favor
  29. of exclusive access through their WWW page, with all its advertising.
  30. I also expressed fears about Viewpoint's insistance that Syndesis stop
  31. marketing their Avalon CD ROM. I predicted that Viewpoint would then want
  32. to market their own version of it. And I was right on with that one, they
  33. plan to have one available for sale at Siiggraph.
  34. Jarrod Phillips had something to say about that too...."John Foust's CD
  35. was not an altruistic venture distributing PD data. (It costs a lot less
  36. than $30/CD to take a tape to a service bureau and get a CD pressed.)"
  37. That's right Mr. Phillips, it certainly does !
  38. Which leads me to a very important issue...What does Viewpoint intend to
  39. charge for THEIR CD ? I think it stands to reason, that their volume in
  40. this area will be greater than that of Syndesis, they already pass out
  41. locked CD's of the data sets that they sell, so they are already have the
  42. capability to produce their own inhouse, or even if they have gone another
  43. route with that, then they already have a relationship with an outside
  44. service bureau, producing those CD's for them. I therefore feel that I am
  45. being fair when I suggest that they can produce a CD cheaper than Mr.
  46. Foust at Syndesis can.
  47. What costs will they have incurred, other than pressing the CD's ?
  48. Probably not much. Sure, they are going to "pretty everything up a little
  49. by making thumbnail sample renderings of the models, and maybe spruce up
  50. the descriptions a bit, but that is all window dressing and their costs
  51. for that should be minimal.
  52. To sum up my concerns regarding the CD then, What price WILL Viewpoint
  53. charge ? I suggest that $5, or $10 tops would be appropriate under the
  54. cicumstances. Let's face it, the lion's share of the work was already done
  55. for them.
  56. I am also concerned that we will have the CD filled up with a lot of
  57. advertising. Wouldn't it be clever of them to set up the CD with a nice
  58. GUI interface which would require us to view all their advertising in
  59. order to get to the models. I hope they don't do that.
  60. I am also concerned that because of the widespread ill will they have
  61. earned for themselves, that they will offer an initial pressing of the CD
  62. at a low price at Siggraph as a gesture, and then jack the price up
  63. several notches when things "cool down" and they have gotten a few more
  64. meshes from us.
  65. Well Viepoint, no need to send me any more nasty E-mail. If my fears have
  66. no basis, PROVE IT ! I am sure that 3D people everywhere are going to be
  67. watching you very closely. You have, by your own admission, already made
  68. too many mistakes in handling Avalon.
